Rare Exports Has Pissed Off Santa! 'A CHRISTMAS TALE', Clip

A Christmas Tale from Rare Exports is an imported horror film. This one is not for children, so don't go in there expecting a Buddy The Elf tale, this one is surprisingly good from what I hear. Now from what we see from the picture; this is one pissed off Santa. Looks to be locked up or chained in a room full of fecal matter. I love Christmas horror more than anything so I will be checking this one out as soon as possible, will you? Film is set for a limited release on December 3rd, 2010. Enjoy the clip below.

On the eve of Christmas in northern Finland, an archeological dig unearths Santa Claus. This particular Santa, however, isn’t the one you want coming to town. When most of the town’s children go missing, Pietari and his father, a local hunter named Rauno, come into possession of the mythological being. Rauno’s clan of hunters attempt to cash in on the opportunity by selling Santa back to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. What ensues is nothing short of a wildly humorous nightmare — a fantastically bizzare polemic on modern day morality.

Today, AMC has announced that it has renewed the zombie blockbuster for a second season with get this, "13" full episodes instead of this years six. Just by reading this eccentric news, you fans of the series either popped a few boners or had your nipples almost rip through your shirt. AMC has been known to bring high powered shows like the drug drama 'BREAKING BAD and 'MAD MEN' to the table, The Walking Dead is just another golden piece of their puzzle of great shows. AMC will "START IT UP" next season like a powdered blue BMW going 108 on the straight away highway, The Walking Dead is high octane!

This article is a little different, but it favors what we do here, and that is twisting a nipple or two to raise awareness in your brain. Not only is this a site for featuring horror news like I mentioned above, but we like to get a little "MACABRE", and that's what this is.

I wanted to bring attention to Rhode Islander's about an organized group called 'Ghost Hunt RI Organized Search Team', they are a local Paranormal Investigation group named "G.H.O.S.T." which stands for Ghost Hunt Organized Search Team, and are from the boiling pots of Warwick Rhode Island. We actually had to stop investigating and went back to base because we had too much activity in one room and we didnt want to contaminate it by people walking around, so we sat and watched the screen for 2 hours ( we have cameras set up in each room, and thankfully this room had aduio set up) for 2 hours we sat thre and heard voices, whispering, banging and clicks, it was a great investigation. I can wait to see the rest of the evidence.

The thoughts about rooming with Leighton Meester have my mind filled with passion, and the thoughts of her in some sexy lingerie. Yeah, that's my fantasy, folks. Although, I might have to reverse that thought after what I've seen from the trailer. This is one of those "I'll cut your pecker off" type of teen revenge flicks. Basically it's about a disturbed college freshman who becomes infatuated with her new roommate. Girl on girl scene? maybe, but my mind has PG-13 all over this flick. What ever the case, the movie has the Gossip Girl queen in it, and that's good enough to get the crotch juices flowing.

Eli Roth's plans for 'THANKSGIVING' is still in the works?

In 2007 "Grindhouse" released the films Planet Terror, and Death Proof, we all got a glimpse of a trailer called 'THANKSGIVING', which had horror fans buzzing in excitement. Eli Roth says he still plans on bringing this holiday slasher flick to the big screen.

Here's the take on all of this: We've seen four "FAKE" trailers released by 'Grindhouse', one has already been made by director Robert Rodriguez and that's 'Machete', and it's set to hit the big screens on September 3rd. Now since 'Machete' has been completed, one would think the rest of the three trailers would get the spotlight and made into complete films. Roth, who knows what horror fans like, truly could make 'Thanksgiving' a memorable slasher flick, if he were to go through with it.

This is what Eli Roth had to say to cinemablend: I’ve been working on the script with my co-writer, Jeff Rendell, who plays the pilgrim in the trailer. And it’s me imitating Jeff’s voice [for the narration]. But Jeff has been working. I said that his deal is he has to work on the script while I’m promoting The Last Exorcism, and as soon as I’m done in mid-September he’s going to fly to California, we’re going to sit down, and bang out the script.

While Roth did say that both he and Rendell are committed to making the film, he does have some concerns about their working relationship.

As much as I love all of the fake trailers in Grindhouse, from Nicolas Cage playing Fu Manchu in Zombie's to Nick Frost as the cannibal baby in Wright's, Thanksgiving has always been far-and-away my favorite of the group. Moments such as the trampoline knife (big ouchie), and the pilgrim having sex with the human-turkey at the end remained in my head all the way through to the end of Death Proof

'PIRANHA 3D' Sequel?

Piranha 3D might have not made a ton of money at the box office and will not be winning any Oscar awards, but Dimension Films have already been talking about a sequel . Piranha 3D is all about excessive gore, jiggly titties, fun cameos and mindless popcorn fun, that's what they promised and that's what you got. There is still no official details, but director Alexandre Aja said to publications was if a sequel is to take place, one of the many ideas would be; A huge even in Thailand with over 200,000 people taking mushrooms and partying on the beach during a full moon. That's just speculation, but if that were to happen, I'd be the first one cheering those nasty Piranha's as they wreak havoc on 200,000 bodies. I find it hard to believe that it could top the "Spring Break Massacre" from the first film, which in my mind is one of the bloodiest scene creations in the history of horror cinema.

Fangoria caught up with EW, who spoke with the producer Mark Canton, who had this to say: "“We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3-D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

Putrid clip from 'THE LAST EXORCISM'

This clip has me more and more excited about Daniel Stamm's 'The Last Exorcism', I actually have "faith" (and I use that word loosely) that this movie could actually scare the shit out of some movie goers. I hope it does, I really do. 2010 seems to be the year that 3D has taken off, it's fine, we get it, but I like my horror flicks to feel raw and gritty with a sense of reality. The Last Exorcism seems to be that flick!

Here's an in depth look at a few more hellish images from the long awaited Walking Dead, which is set to debut this October on AMC

The Walking Dead is based on the comic book by Robert Kirkman and it's a six-episode series, I was hoping for at least a twelve episode series run, but from what I'm seeing from the images, I'm happy just to see the series unfold.

Series synopsis from AMC : The Walking Dead tells the story of life following a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, traveling in search of a safe and secure home. Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, Teachers, Strike Back) will portray the lead role of Rick Grimes while actor Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) will portray the character Shane, who worked with Rick in the police department before the zombie disaster. Without yet seeing 'THE LOVED ONES' I can tell you that this is one of those movies you'll put up on a pedestal, maybe I'm jumping on the optimistic roller coaster, but from the trailer and the clip (below) I can say that I would place a very high bet of this film arousing more horror fans than a pair of double D tits at a bachelor party. The Loved Ones is an Australian film written and directed by Sean Byrne and is scheduled to be released across seas on October 28th, 2010 unfortunately there is no release date here in the US. Check out the trailer and clip below, you won't want to miss this beautifully, yet macabre structure of film. The Loved Ones may look pretty on poster, but damn, it's a uber-violent, I can assure you that!

Plot synopsis: Lila The Legend Teller and her frisky sidekick Whiskers brings you four stories that are more then just myths or fairy tales ….these are urban legends, with endings that are far from happy.

The first legend is “The Clown Statue” with Jasmine a college freshman struggling to make ends meet, so she takes up babysitting to make cash while going to school. Jasmine takes up the job of watching the Newton’s kids Allie and Jonas. But little did Jasmine know that she would be a victim to a deranged serial killer who dresses up like a clown out to kill all babysitters.

The second legend is “Kidney Jacking” Misti a everyday nine to five office desk worker has the worst Friday. When she stops by her boyfriends house that morning to catch him sleeping with another woman. Misti decides to go out with friends from work to their favorite bar. Misti ends up meeting James a british fellow that is buying Misti drinks to make her feel better about what happen with her boyfriend. After one to many drinks Misti blacks out. Only to wake up in a bathtub filled with ice and her kidney missing. Misti must do whatever she can to escape from the house and find help before it’s to late.

The third legend “Bloody Mary” involves six mid 20 year old friends who meet up for a friendly get together at Scott and Jessica’s house. When the friendly bunch find out that Monica has never played Bloody Mary growing up. The group of friends peer pressure Monica into playing to show her its not real. After some drinking and joking around the group performs the ritual of calling Bloody Mary…..not knowing that on this night Bloody Mary would appear and she was coming to kill everybody.

The fourth legend “The Man, The Myth, The Legend” follows two college roommates Nate and Vince. Vince who happens to be a real ladies man…..while his roommate Nate has just recently been dumped by his girlfriend. Go out for a college party with Vince’s teammate Briggs. This is one party Vince wish he would’ve missed, because on this night Vince may have met his match when it comes to the ladies.

This time 'THE EXORCIST' possesses Blu-Ray format with shocking HD visualization, and packaged in a two disc digibook with a personal letter by director Friedkin. The directors extended cut and theatrical formats will also be included. There will be an overload of extra features to keep many fans happy. Years later, Bill Blatty asked if I'd consider reviewing some of that rejected footage (which he always felt should have remained) with an eye towards putting it into a new version. Bill gave me the best piece of material I've ever received and because of that and because the film had such a major reputation over some 25 years, I agreed to revisit all these scenes. When I saw them, I came to realize that Bill was, in fact, right. Here's the poster for the returning slasher film SCREAM 4, which is set to debut in theaters April 15th, 2011. Beyond Hollywood has said that the Original stars include: Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette return. Possible additions include Lake Bell, Ashley Greene, Hayden Panettiere, and Rory Culkin. Kevin Williamson returns to plot the killings, with Wes Craven orchestrating it from behind the camera.

Part 4 finds 10 years have passed since a Ghostface killer’s appearance, but when the killer resurfaces again, it forces our heroes to come out of retirement to confront him.

[REC] 2 Comes home, when?

The latest news on [REC] 2, is that it will get its debut release very soon here in the US . [REC] 2 premiers On Demand, Xbox LIVE, Playstation, Amazon, and Vudu June 4th and in selected theaters July 9th. Avoid hangovers: stay [REC'd].

[REC] 2 is the anticipated sequel to the terrifying cult favorite, [REC]. Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza return for [REC] 2, maintaining the same claustrophobic concept or the original while finding new means of delivering scares to the audience. [REC] told the story of a quarantined apartment building infected with a ferocious virus that spread a terrifying form of demonic possession to the trapped inhabitants. [REC] 2 kicks off shortly after the events of the first film, when a medical officer and a SWAT team armed with video cameras are sent into the sealed off apartment building to try and neutralize the situation.

Two more [REC] sequels?

The claustrophobic zombie/possession known as [REC], will have two new films in a few years time. Directors of the first two films, Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero are set to return and create two new films in the wake of the first film. The additions of [REC] and [REC]2, will be called [REC] Genesis and [REC] Apocalypse. If this news doesn't make a vibrator buzz without batteries, I don't know what will.

Detailed report from Bloody-Disgusting

[REC] directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero will split directing responsibilities for the two films. Plaza will direct the first film Genesis, which much like the Batman and Star Trek franchises will return to the origin of the original infection that caused humans to turn into zombies.

Paco Plaza and Luis Alejandro Berdejo (The New Daughter) will co-write Genesis with Balaguero actively involved in the development of the project. The film is expected to be delivered in the autumn of 2011.

Apocalypse will be directed by Balaguero and will end the [REC] saga with the pandemic spreading to unknown proportions. Plaza will assist on the project, which is expected to be delivered in the autumn of 2012.

“We were overwhelmed by the audience’s reaction to [REC]. It was precisely this which inspired us to keep going with [REC]2. Again, the great support we have received from audiences and Filmax motivates us to investigate the [REC] idea even further,” say Plaza and Balagueró.

Update on 'The Strangers 2'

Back in 2008, Relatively Media released The Strangers, a motion picture that was inspired by some real life events. Whether the true events that surround the movie are true, it still remains to be seen. The first film starred the attractive couple of Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, the couple are terrorized in a violent home invasion by masked criminals. For there to be a second installment of the original, the film itself had to make a little money which it did, may be more so on video then the theaters, but enough for Relatively Media to go ahead with a second feature.

beyond-hollywood reports that: The sequel will apparently take the psychos to an abandoned trailer park to continue their random spree killing ways, though there’s no details about how Tyler’s character will fit into the plot. Of course, they could just kill her off in the first couple of minutes, which would probably piss off a lot of fans of the original, but horror filmmakers have been known to pull this stunt before.

Bryan Bertino, who directed the first one, returns to write the sequel, but directing chores will go to Frenchman Laurent Briet.

Fourth TV Spot for Elm Street 2010

Really, what's not to love when it comes to zombie violence. Resident Evil Afterlife hits theaters September 10, 2010. The MARCH of Death, Day 26: 'Doghouse'

Unfortunately for the writer and director of 2009’s Doghouse what they have produced is absolutely NOT remarkable. The problem here is either the timing of their film, or the fact that they simply have nothing original to offer. In many ways this has been done before, much more successfully, with the likes of: Black Sheep, Severence, and The Cottage. It seems Vince just isn’t coming to terms with his divorce. Thank goodness for friends, as they attempt to come to his rescue. As each male in this story has their own issues with the female gender, they drag him off on a weekend of drunken madness to help them all forget what ails them. Arriving in the village of Moodley, the women outnumber the men at nearly three to one. Unfortunately these women are blood thirsty Zombie-like crazies with a craving for man flesh. Doghouse isn’t terrible. It’s just not really anything special. The acting is fine, the direction is uneventful, the effects decent, but the humor just falls flat. Been there, done that.

After Dark's newest franchise of horror films, After Dark's Originals, was announced last week - releasing eight original films to represent After Dark's commitment to emerge writers and directors to solely focus on it's creative vision.
All eight films have been announced, and the first image released is an image from 'Prowl'. Similarities to '30 Days of Night' sure, but it's undeniable that the film looks like it's taken on a higher budget than After Dark's '8 Films To Die For'.

'Prowl' sypnosis - "Amber dreams of escaping her small town and persuades her friends to accompany her partment-hunting in the big city. When their transportation breaks down, Amber and friends gratefully accept a ride in the back of a semi. But when the driver refuses to stop and they discover the cargo is cartons of blood, they panic. Soon, panic turns to terror when the truck disgorges into a dark, abandoned warehouse where blood-thirsty creatures learn to hunt human prey, which the friends realize is what they have now become..."

"Let The Battle Commence!"

Kevin Greutert, director of 'Saw VI' was pulled over to direct 'Paranormal Activity 2'. That was until Lionsgate demanded Greutert back to direct 'Saw VII'. It is now confirmed that Tod Williams - director of 'The Door in the Floor' - is at the helm of one of 2010's most anticipated sequels.

The MARCH of Death, Day 25: 'Cannibal'

Marian Dora’s 2006 film Cannibal is quite something to wrap your head around. The true story of Armin Meiwes, known in Germany as the internet cannibal is simply put: mind numbingly hellish. Often when you see the title card: Based On Actual Events arrive at the start of a film, you can be sure that it either is not true at all or has been embellished for entertainment purposes. It is my belief that Dora set out with only one intent: to document and show the incredibly vile happenings between two consenting men. Gore hounds may revel in it’s graphically visceral depiction of death and dismemberment. But if one chooses to do a little research on Meiwes and watch this film as more of a case study, well, you’re going to want to remove your eyes with a spork. I have a tremendous interest in serial killers. I am fascinated by reading and researching about people who inflict this type of pain on the world. What struck such a chord with Meiwes’ story is the fact that his “victim” was a willing participant. The narrative involves a man who is trolling the internet to find someone wanting to be eaten. As he himself has the unhealthy desire to consume someone else completely. After a few stalled attempts, Meiwes finally finds his soul mate. Their initial meeting leads to some very disturbing and uncomfortable revelations. This act of cannibalism is arousing on many levels for both men. A sexual relationship quickly blooms and it isn’t long before the love making turns into the ghastly ceremony of dissection and evisceration. I’m not spoiling anything. You know right from the door the exact path this story will take. The only surprises or shocks come from seeing what you could not imagine transpiring in front of you. There is virtually no dialogue, the performances a subtle, minimal, bleak. In my opinion, this is not a film built to entertain. It is a film built to show the viewer a snapshot in the life of two men who consented to something that for whatever reasons they needed more passionately than this reviewer could ever comprehend. I encourage you to do some research on Meiwes and then, and only then, watch Cannibal and decide for yourself whether the film is pure exploitation or a documentation of one of the most bizarre events in human history.

The MARCH of Death, Day 24: Necromentia

This will most definitely be my shortest MARCH of Death review to date. No, not because I’m drunk, lazy, or getting called to the bedroom lustily by my wife. That last one NEVER happens. The reason being, I am so strongly attached to and effected by Pearry Reginald Teo’s Necromentia, that my only hope is that you to can have the same pure, untainted, and horrific experience I had when I first had the pleasure of viewing it. The nightmarish imagery and intricately woven narrative that has spewed forth from Teo’s mind’s eye is something to behold. Love, lust, anger, betrayal, and revenge unfold poetically and viscerally in equal parts. Whether you are following Hagen , Travis, Morbius, or Mr. Skinny (yes I said Mr. Skinny) you can’t help but find a part of your deepest and sometimes darkest being within them. There have been Clive Barker references made and it certainly goes without saying that some of the imagery and themes contained within are parallel. But where Barker’s tales choose to grab you by the balls and shake you into submission; Teo grabs ‘em, massages them, and then rips ‘em right the fuck off. I only wish I knew what it meant to love the way Necromentia’s principles love: if I did, I’d be more than happy to go to hell and back. As it is now, what we genre fans have is a film that clearly carved out a moment in our lives and a filmmaker who has frightened and aroused our collective souls at the very same time.

The MARCH of Death, Day 23: The House of the Devil

Ti West may have wanted his name removed from Cabin Fever 2, he may also have even directed the less than stellar The Roost. However, all that becomes irrelevant for me when talking about The House of the Devil. The way some people hold up The Sixth Sense as Shyamalan’s masterpiece (forgiving things like Lady In The Water) is the way I choose to look at Ti West. It’s very difficult, with the number of films I watch to be captivated by anything so completely. I do have a real interest in very slow paced, stressfully tense, independent horror. So it should come as no surprise after that statement that Mr. West’s 2009 impeccably realized period piece (set in the early 80’s) is my favorite film of 2009. Jocelin Donahue, as Samantha, finds herself in need of some serious cash for a new apartment. Despite her friend’s warnings, she takes a baby-sitting job at the very creepy Ulman’s. Needless to say, she is not there to sit, yet Mr.Ulman (Tom Noonan) convinces her to stay with a stress erasing sum of money. Once alone in the house, Samantha falls into a state of peril that is agonizing to watch and even more stressful to get to. The ending doesn’t hinge on a groundbreaking “twist.” What Ti West and The House of the Devil does is tell a story. The story of Samantha’s decent into the unthinkable. Which incidentally, ends the way it has to. This is what great storytellers do: they let the characters take their journey, no matter how terrible or heartbreaking it may be.

The MARCH of Death, Day 22: Spider Baby

If ever there was a film to be explained with words like: weird, icky, disturbing, and B-Movie classic; this is it. In 1964, Jack Hill gave birth to Spider Baby. A movie that for all intents and purposes had no business ever being made. Not only is this little number shocking and off-putting to levels I can’t quite wrap my head around; it’s a piece of subversive cinema that must have reeked holy hell on the startled viewers of the time. For those of you who only discovered Sid Haig in The House of 1000 Corpses or The Devil’s Rejects, you’re in for quite a treat. Just imagine that one of a kind head, same size, no beard, still bald up top, plopped on a much smaller frame. Haig was 25 when he joined the misfit cast and puts in quite a magnificent performance. Yet at the same time you can’t help feeling sorry for the guy. He could obviously act, one can only imagine his lack of leading man good looks really hampered his career. Anyhow, I digress and will move on. The story centers around the last of the Merrye family. A small group who suffer from a degenerative brain disease (presumably from decades of inbreeding) that has turned them into homicidal savages. In a wacky turn, Lon Chaney Jr. plays the family chauffeur Bruno, who spends most of his time covering up the kids’ bloodlust. However, this all comes into jeopardy when some cousins and there attorney show up with plans to “restructure” the family. Plans which the Merrye’s strongly oppose. Spider Baby starts off with a graphic and bizarre prologue which I will not spoil. I will venture to say that if this scene hooks you, you will not be disappointed with the direction the rest of the narrative goes in. While not recommended solely for lovers of subversive cinema, the movie does require a specific taste. A taste that lingers in the back of your throat long after the Merrye’s wrath has ended.

The MARCH of Death, Day 21: The Funhouse

Director Tobe Hooper is most famously known for two things: Directing the seminal Texas Chainsaw Massacre and kinda sorta directing Poltergeist under the thumb of one Steven Spielberg. Whether or not the later is true will be up for debate until the man shuffles off this mortal coil to the big meat freezer in the sky. Although, what I remember him most for is The Funhouse. Why? Because way back when Drive-Ins were the rage, my mother (in all her wisdom) took her 7 year old son to see it. It was a hot summer evening in my small town, we were bored out of our minds and thought that an evening on a blanket in front of that giant screen would thrill. In fact, I was scared shitless and chilled to the bone by what I saw. Needless to say, I had a blast. For this very reason, The Funhouse will always be the Tobe Hooper “joint” that resonates with me the most. I still remember the astonishment I felt as he took me into a carnival, it’s gleefully welcoming surroundings, and deep into my favorite attraction. Only to plant inside it’s bowels a disfigured man child so horrific I could’ve cared less about the load that lie nestled in the seat of my Yoda Underoos. The Funhouse centers generally around two couples who decide to creep around the carnival after hours and spend the night in the afore mentioned house of mirrors and midgets. Little do they know that living inside, is a grotesquely deformed man who has little interest in letting them leave, let alone live. Upon revisiting this nearly a decade after my last viewing, I’m sad to report it doesn’t quite live up to my recollection. The story meanders and bores more often than not. The direction is stale. The acting sub-par to say the least. For me though, what still shines through is the ability for the ordinary to become surprisingly frightening. Like the menacing shadow of a tree through a lightening storm, or the sound of a music box in a dark and empty house, putting that “thing” in the basement of The Funhouse still creeps me out to this day.

The WWE as of today are now telling their superstars that they're forbidden to visit Ring of Honor and Dragon GateUSA shows which are scheduled for that entire weekend. The WWE is a crock of shit, it goes to show you that they truly despise anything and everything that doesn't have their name on it. Sure it's business but would it really hurt for superstars to visit some independent promotions? Maybe they will actually learn something from watching these wrestlers perform in the ring.

ewrestling news reports: WWE is reportedly being very strict with their talent in Phoenix during WrestleMania 26 week. They want talent to be kept as busy as possible and don't want people wandering off to ROH or Dragon Gate USA events. Talent have been told specifically to not attend these events. The MARCH of Death, Day 20: 'Triangle'

If the name Christopher Smith sounds familiar it’s for one of two reasons: either it’s an uncommonly plain and recognizable name, or you know of his films Creep and Severance. I for one am a huge fan of Severance and make no apologies for it. That effort blended humor and gore to such a divine degree that you find yourself laughing at the gore and cringing at the humor; in the best possible way. So while some may find Triangle a huge departure in the darkly comedic respect, I for one was pleasantly anticipating viewing a straight up dramatic narrative from Mr. Smith. The movie centers around a small group of people out on a yacht and headed inevitably toward the dreaded Bermuda Triangle. When a brutal storm essentially leaves their boat immobile, the group finds themselves with little choice but to board a mysterious and deserted ship. The pacing that it takes to execute this type of mundane setup is quite tricky. In my opinion, although very deliberate, Smith plants each of the stories feet firmly in front of the other on his way to what Triangle ultimately becomes: a supernatural mind bender of sorts. Shining the spotlight squarely on the uber-talented Melissa George, Smith seems to know she is up for such the challenge. The first time I really stopped and noticed Ms. George was in a little film called 30 Days of Night. Yes, I loved it. But other than being shocked by Josh Hartnett’s turn, I was utterly taken by George. As the twists and turns begin to pile up and slowly approach ludicrous heights; Melissa George’s performance just kept making it work for me. She convincingly brings us through the fear, confusion, realization, and horror of what may or may not be happening; and because of this ability, she anchors the film. I know, but I had to go there. Triangle will not capsize the spooky ghost ship sub-genre. However, I will say this: If there is such a thing as a spooky ghost ship sub-genre, I was never a fan. What makes Triangle ultimately enjoyable, is the considerable directorial finesse of Christopher Smith, the acting chops of Melissa George, and the willingness of the viewer to go with the proverbial flow. Fortunately for me, I was willing and able to thoroughly enjoy my trip into the triangle.

The MARCH of Death, Day 19: 'Maniac'

To the mainstream audience or casual horror fan, Maniac! is either a completely unknown film or an outdated slasher. To many avid genre aficionados however, Maniac! in many ways marks a moment in horror cinema that was simply about brutality. It wasn’t about hacking and slashing away at silly, horny, stoned teenagers This was a movie that was about an adult doing terribly vile things to other adults. The subject matter was (and still is) brutal, disturbing, and genuinely unsettling stuff. What really cements Maniac! as a nightmarish narrative of mental illness and the homicidal tendencies that can accompany it, is the performance of Joe Spinell. In real life Spinell was a big teddy bear who just wanted to have a good time. The gusto with which he lived his life, in many ways paralleled the fervor with which he took on the role of Frank. Although abused by his mother, Frank can not help but mourn her death and take his suffering to extreme lengths. As his realities, fantasies, and nightmares begin to slowly converge into one heaping pile of homicidal chaos; the “Maniac” unleashes every unspeakably haunting emotion onto a wide variety of unassuming innocents. Keeping his trophies stashed away in his apartment and interacting with them as if real, Frank doesn’t just descend into madness; he puts his head down and charges gleefully into it’s welcoming arms. Directed by William Lustig in a deliberately bare bones fashion, this feels like found footage. It’s almost as if there just happens to be a camera nearby to capture the festivities. I would be dishonest if I said that Maniac! registered on my classic meter, because in fact it’s merely an adequate film. What makes it so watchable and disturbing, once again, is Spinell. The simple fact that he was able to commit to, and deliver, such an uncompromisingly despicable character makes you absolutely positive that somewhere out there; there really are Maniacs waiting to uncork their hellish bloodlust.

The MARCH of Death, Day 18: 'Dog Soldiers'

I will be the first to admit that I am not a werewolf fanatic. There are genre fans obsessed with vampire films, zombie films, Frankenstein adaptations and the like. I however, do not gravitate toward any one creature or monstrous incarnation. With that being said, when a werewolf movie is done well, I’m all in. Jack Nicholson’s Wolf, American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and yes: Dog Soldiers. Neil Marshall’s 2002 directorial debut, the precursor to The Descent and Doomsday, is a quite impressive first go at genre filmmaking. Let me rephrase that. Neil Marshall’s genre film directorial debut is a high octane, obscenely imaginative, viscerally realized kick in the balls. The film grabs hold of the scruff of the viewers neck and shakes the piss out of you over the course of a brilliantly brisk 105 minutes. Deep in The Scottish woodlands a group of elite soldiers are undergoing what should be routine military exercises. However, as brutally maimed bodies begin to turn up, the soldiers realize they are being stalked by a force not all together human. Fortunately for our boys in fatigues, a young women comes to their rescue and holes them up in her nearby farmhouse. Seems what is nipping at our group’s heels is not all together foreign to her, and as she explains; comes standard with living in the neighborhood. As the narrative plays out, our principles finally accept that they are being unrelentingly hunted by a pack of lycanthropes. What Dog Soldiers lacks in budget it wholeheartedly makes up for in: direction, atmosphere, acting, and creature design. One of the things I most respect about this film is that you never see a transformation scene. That may sound a bit odd, but let me explain. Do I want to look at a shitty human to werewolf metamorphosis because the director doesn’t have the money to pull it off? Or do I want a film slathered so thick with dread and terror that I don’t even realize I haven’t seen a transformation? Question answered. Dog Soldiers does what few creature features succeed at: it takes the werewolf sub-genre, flips it on it’s head, splits it right down the middle, and feasts on it’s innards.

What can be said about Hitchcock's The Birds? I mean, for Christ’s sake, it’s about birds! But to be fair, and in all seriousness, in 1963, when giant creature features were everywhere, The Birds was truly frightening. These were not monstrous radioactive mutations, they were not sent from another planet, or awakened after lying dormant under us for centuries. What Hitchcock did (as he did so often) was take the seemingly ordinary or mundane and terrify us with it. This film exemplifies what I have always admired and found so intriguing about him: his ability to scare. What he truly understood is that the most horrific things are those in our environment that cease to behave as we expect them to. The story is a simple one, and it doesn’t need to be otherwise. We find ourselves in San Francisco following Melanie Daniels in her attempt to woo a handsome attorney. Upon arriving in Bodega Bay, it becomes clear that something is not quite right. In particular, the avian population is behaving strangely. Congregating in large flocks and seemingly stalking the townsfolk. As if this isn’t already creepy enough, the birds don’t want to just look, they want to touch. Actually, they want to bite and peck. The splashes of bright red blood and visceral violence are pretty unsettling even today. One can always recall scenes of birds crashing against telephone booth glass, swarming around and into women’s hair, and squawking and squealing their way into attack formation. If Jaws made you afraid to go in the water, then I guess The Birds just made you afraid to go outside. I’d say that’s pretty damn frightening.

Depending on when you watch Jacob’s Ladder, what kind of mood you may be in, and certainly if you are under the influence of any kind of mind altering substance your experience will vary. I was 16 years old when this film hobbled into the multiplex on a very short lived theatrical release. God bless my mother, who loved sharing these types of films with me. I remember this afternoon out vividly, because it was the first time I had ever seen my mother shaken to her core by a film. Now granted, my father was a Vietnam Vet, and although I have still never asked; I often wonder to this day if my mom saw a little bit of my dad in poor old Jacob Singer. I have experienced this film on so many different occasions and on so many different levels, it’s actually difficult to review. As stated above, Jacob’s Ladder changes in effect each time you view it. I believe that this is a film that grows with the viewer and should be watched frequently throughout one’s life. I know, I’m getting too deep and over thinking this a bit; or am I? Depending on your lens at the time, the movie can be seen in many different ways: cautionary war tale, tragic love story, the diary of a grieving parent, psychedelic mind blitz, man’s downward spiral into insanity, the hopeless battle against one’s inner demons. In Jacob Singer, we have a returning Vietnam soldier coping with the recent death of his young son, his relationship with his ex-wife, his current girlfriend, pain and guilt, shell shock, and reacclimating himself back into “real” life. It’s a tragedy on the grandest Shakespearian scale. As Jacob’s “hallucinations” become more intense, the viewer begins to lose their footing on the rabbit hole walls and fall deeper with him into oblivion. Shocking, heartbreaking, highly sexualized, and relentless in it’s attack on your senses it’s a film that leaves you thinking (just like Jacob) did I really see what I thought I just saw?

The MARCH of Death, Day 15: 'Altered States'

Ken Russell’s 1980 mind fuck of a film, Altered States is quite something to behold, even 30 years later. I remember vividly the psychological influence the visuals had on me way back when; and although the effects are dated, the trauma they inflict is in no way muted. The story itself centers around a Harvard scientist who performs mind altering experiments on himself in an isolation chamber of sorts. These experiments get out of hand quickly and the good doctor finds himself being thrown back and forth between hallucinations, reality, and transformations of the mind and body. If someone were to tell me this project was a Cronenberg film, I would have no problem believing them. The body horror is on par with anything you see in The Fly (1986) or Videodrome. You also get some Re-Animator-ish / Stuart Gordon flares thrown in for good measure. However, with that being said, this film never feels derivative. Watching this again, it feels every bit as fresh (well as fresh as this type of flesh can feel) as it did the last time I revisited it: nearly a decade ago. Altered States is a flawed film. But for every narrative inadequacy, the visual style and fervor with which Russell directs his leads more than compensates for any of it’s shortcomings.

The MARCH of Death, Day 14: 'The Legend of Hell House'

Ok all, here we go. My first experience with John Hough’s 1973 Legend of Hell House. I can honestly say this made The MARCH of Death specifically because I had never seen it and considered it to be on my film “bucket list.” Let me just say that half way through, I was more than happy to “kick that bucket.” Hell House tells the story of a group of four paranormal investigators. The group has been invited to a week long stay at a supposedly haunted mansion. Said investigators are essentially divided into two camps: those who intend to prove the hauntings are in fact real and those who are there in the hopes of debunking the myths. The crux of the narrative is the belief that all previous guests of this mansion have in some fashion gone mad. The drive of the narrative? Will the same fate befall our current group of lodgers? The core of the story is not all together terrible. The execution, however, is pretty damn close to unbearable. Whether it’s the cardboard acting, the soap opera like cinematography, or the (no pun intended) paper thin script, The Legend of Hell House is an utter failure. If you’ve been keeping up with The MARCH of Death, you know I am hardly adverse to films from all decades. On the contrary, some of my favorites come from the very beginnings of the genre. I think what pains me is that in some way this film has been held up as a classic in some fashion. From a man who would bring us both “Escape From...” and “Return To Witch Mountain” just two years later, Mr. Hough thoroughly needed a break from filmmaking. Thank goodness he got his stay of execution with those Disney family turds. The Legend of Hell House is neither suspenseful or cryptic. It’s the type of film that has me checking IMDB to see if those involved are still alive. I really have a nasty little itch to slap them all in the face.

The MARCH of Death, Day 13: A Tale of Two Sisters

If ever there was an apt film title, this is it. Remade in The States as The Uninvited, Ji-woon Kim’s A Tale of Two Sisters is a movie that explains itself in the title card, but not so much on celluloid. Centering around (of course) two sisters, the plot slowly begins to engulf and confuse both the siblings and viewer. Having been away at a “hospital,” you open with the kids returning home to their father and stepmother. In many ways little sis is just happy to be home, but as she is very easily influenced by her older sibling, she soon begins to resent the current family arrangement as well. To say that this stepmother is wicked is perhaps not accurate. This particular version is much more conniving and secretive. You see, there is an unspoken evil/ill inside this family’s home, a cloud hanging mercilessly overhead. Strange things are seen, felt, and heard. And although this is a Korean film, it is not wise to lump it into the Asian ghost wave of filmmaking. Don’t think of The Ring, The Grudge, or even The Eye. Two Sisters has none of their kinetic energy or camerawork. The cinematography is stunning, with color bringing to light some exceptional visual queues. The pace is slow, deliberate, frustrating at times. If you’re looking for crap your drawers scares, you probably wont find it here. What you will find is a profound sense of dread and a tremendous amount of fear for the well being of our two young protagonists. A Tale of Two Sisters won’t quite shock you, but it will creep it’s way up and down your spine with equal parts tension and tease.

Updated report on 'Night of the Demons' remake

The latest report on Adam Gierach's Night of the Demons is that there is a tentative release date scheduled for this film. They're hoping to get this title released on September 23, 2010, as of now it's a ball park figure estimation and things could change at any moment. Cast lineup for Night of the Demons consists of Shannon Elizabeth, Monica Keena, Diora Biard, Jonathon Beach, Tiffany Shepis, Edward Furlong and the list goes on. Will we see the remake of this released this Fall? Question remains up in the air.

Gierach spoke to Dread Central and had this to say: “Hopefully we’ll be able to do some concerts to celebrate the release,” said Geirasch, whose directorial debut was the 2008 film Autopsy. “We are definitely going to do (one) in L.A., and maybe New York, and I can’t guarantee it, but I hope New Orleans because that is where the movie takes place and where we shot it.”

Appearing on the soundtrack are “45 Grave, who did our theme song,” revealed the filmmaker, “and Type O Negative, TSOL, Pscyhocharger, Goatwhore, Wednesday 13, and Dead By Day. The soundtrack is awesome, and it’s all the way through the whole movie, too. We did fight scenes to punk-rock songs, demon attacks to punk-rock songs – I describe it as ‘party horror’.”

In 1931 director James Whale brought to life perhaps the most beloved of all the Universal “monsters” in Frankenstein. Boris Karloff’s portrayal of the titular creature was nothing short of breathtaking. What you have is the blending of so many personas that the audience genuinely can’t help but feel empathy and fear at the same time. Almost as painful as the monster’s existence, the viewer is caught in that very same web of suffering in large part because of the way Mr. Whale brings the creature to the heart of the story. It is only fitting then, in the very same year, that the principles returned for The Bride of Frankenstein. Addressing that purist of all human emotions and needs, Whale set out to tell the tale of a doctor attempting to appease and control his creation with love. So through the very same process that birthed the male, Dr. Frankenstein pieces together a bride for his groom. Problem is, as was true in the previous experiment, our Bride hardly realizes what she is. Mortified and paralyzed with fear at the sight of her suitor, she (Elsa Lanchester) unleashes one of the most chilling shrieks ever captured on film. Of course it’s all downhill from there. Is it going to far to say that this entry shines just as brightly as it’s predecessor; not in my humble opinion. The Bride of Frankenstein strikes at our core by showing both the desire to be loved and the pain that comes from rejection. Truly horrific stuff.

The MARCH of Death, Day 11: Ginger Snaps

The 2000 independent horror darling Ginger Snaps landed on the scene with little mainstream fanfare. However, it was with those genre fans that are always in search of something fresh and exciting that this movie made it’s splash and continued to pick up steam. The look, feel, and slight twist on the werewolf mythology really did plant it in a bit of it’s own sub genre. Starring teenagers, it really wasn’t your typical teen horror film. Featuring low budget practical creature effects, it really wasn’t the mess it should have been. Starring two unknown Canadian actresses, it really wasn’t paint by numbers performances that the viewer got. What Ginger Snaps does, is play your typical teen/preteen stereotypes for sympathy, not for laughs. In the actresses performances you have a wonderfully nuanced portrayal of a young girl entering into puberty; having that hormonal chaos echoed and piggybacked by a monstrous change that’s occurring simultaneously. You have a girl who for so long had felt powerless and out of place in the Junior High world of cliques and cunts (and while frightening to her sister) these animalistic tendencies are in many ways welcomed by her. For the first time in her life she feels empowered and focused. Much different then the confusion and fear many young women feel upon their first periods, I would imagine. I can’t express to the reader how fully I believe in this film as a truly profound way for horror to pierce deeper into the social and emotional components of life. Although the two sequels are very strong and take the Ginger Snaps mythos in new and interesting directions; the original will always be the one that allowed a lonely misfit of a girl to find her primal self-worth and rip out a few throats along the way.

The MARCH of Death, Day 10: The Abominable Dr. Phibes

So here we are again. Another Vincent Price vehicle, another trip to yesteryear. 1971’s The Abominable Dr. Phibes is quite a ride. It seems doctors are being killed off one at a time in ways that mirror the nine biblical plagues. Hot on the killer’s trail, the detectives working the case are becoming more and more puzzled. You see, these doctors are all linked to the failed operation on one Dr. Phibes’ deceased wife. Once this fact surfaces, the case becomes even more difficult to solve. Seems Dr. Phibes died shortly after his wife’s death in a tragic car accident. What a setup! And true to it’s title, Dr. Phibes truly is abominable. Vincent Price once again commands every scene he is present in. The atmosphere and mood in this 70’s thrill ride is thick as the fog in a London alley, and because of this, the ride couldn’t be more enjoyable. I have to admit that this film would hardly seem to fit into my wheel house; being that it’s kind of a comedy/musical/horror/thri

ller; but pigeon holes be damned! I love this movie! To define it through these genre trappings alone is a bit of a disservice. I would rather refer to The Abominable Dr. Phibes as that little 70’s gem of a film that guides you into a trance of horrifically silly pleasure.

The MARCH of Death, Day 9: The Orphanage

If you are looking for a film that shocks, horrifies, and moves along at a break neck pace with jump scares galore and buckets o’ blood; stay far away from The Orphanage. If you thirst for the visceral carnage and horrible flashes of the aftermath of extreme violence, go elsewhere. If, however, you are in the mood to be mentally tested and shaken to your core; Juan Antonio Bayona’s 2007 haunted (no pun intended) house film should do nicely. A Spanish film that received high praise and solid reviews upon it’s release, The Orphanage owes a great deal of it’s mojo to the attachment of Guillermo del Toro’s name to the TV spots and DVD art. Riding high off the success of Pan’s Labyrinth, once del Toro’s involvement became known, the curiosity over Bayona’s movie became palpable. The story revolves around the rehabilitation of a beautiful old house back into an orphanage. This time for disabled children. The person doing the rehabbing? A woman who has fond memories of said house’s humble beginnings. Accompanied by her husband and young son, she is slowly pulled into the mysterious building’s past and engulfed by it’s sinister present. As I stated above, The Orphanage will hardly grab you by the collar and shake you into submission. What it does do (through brilliant direction, narrative, acting, and sound design) is break your heart in the creepiest possible way. It’s a horrific tale of love, loss, deception, and redemption. A movie that is to be felt as much as seen. A groundbreaking entry in the genre’s cannon for those of us who like their scares to linger, in the back of our gray matter, long after the screen goes blank.

The MARCH of Death, Day 8: 'Zombie Holocaust

Marino Girolami's 1980 zombie film is quite a mish-mash of a genre film. Mixing both zombies and cannibals in New York City and on a tropical island, the viewer gets what I imagine would be referred to as a cross between Cannibal Holocaust and Fulci's Zombie. This should in no way be considered a staple of the genre, let alone groundbreaking in it's approach. What this movie does do, is mark a period in time where these types of cheddar filled gore fests were really picking up steam. I can imagine a first run audience being genuinely disturbed and disgusted by what they saw. By today's standards the gore and narrative come off as tremendously forced and uninteresting. Don't misunderstand, I am not totally discounting this film as dribble. This concept was done much better quite a few times, but there is some nostalgic enjoyment to be had. Zombie Holocaust is just not the type of viewing experience I found scary, creepy, or suspenseful. While watching a doctor and journalist unearth the mystery of cannibalistic activity in New York City, the overall feeling is much more about “come on let's get to the action,” than “wow this is really interesting.” So, as more than just a passing fan of the zombie genre, I humbly proclaim Zombie Holocaust a carbon copy of much better zombie films of the same ilk; with a few memorably gory moments sprinkled throughout.

The MARCH of Death, Day 7: 'Frailty'

Book ended by present day and told in it's entirety as a flashback, Frailty is the story of a small family in a small Texas town. First time director, Bill Paxton does an adequate job behind the camera. This film really does not call for more than that. What Frailty is really all about is the the story; and what a story the viewer is given. The narrative brings us the story of a father and his two young sons. Essentially, one day dad announces to his boys that he has been blessed by God with the ability to see demons. It seems these demons walk the Earth shrouded in the human form ready to do terrible things at a moments notice. Not only has Mr. Meeks been gifted with this sixth sense of sorts; but God has also entrusted him with capturing and killing said demons. Quite a calling, and the reason the authorities have dubbed this serial killer: The God's Hand Killer. The main thrust of the story comes when Mr. Meeks enlists the help of his two young boys in the new family business. Frailty in and of itself is about much more than just these terrible actions. It's about the destruction of the family dynamic. The devotion of children to their parents. The question of whether or not Mr. Meeks is mentally ill, or celestially gifted. I must admit to not being a huge fan of this film initially. However, upon rewatching it and knowing what course the narrative would take, I quite enjoyed Frailty this time around. The acting is solid, the script (as I stated before) very intensely woven, and the sympathy you feel for these boys is genuinely heartbreaking.

May seems to be one of those genre films that everyone has heard about. The general consensus is overwhelmingly positive. However, May also seems to be a highly regarded genre film that not all that many people have seen. I was in this camp for many years. It was just one of those movies that I had difficulty making time for. When I finally sat down with Lucky McKee's little film that could last year, I was floored. Angela Bettis and McKee have worked together two other times: Roman and The Masters of Horror's Sick Girl. I have to say, although these other two partnerships were mildly successful in their own ways, May is one of those rare moments where the film fairy smiles generously down upon both director and actor at the very same moment. Ms. Bettis gives a performance that seeps tragically into your subconscious and does not let go. May tells the story of a VERY lonely young women. A young women, who for virtually her entire life has not only been without friendship, but been encouraged by her own mother to live this way. Over the years she has become tremendously introverted despite her desire to meet and make friends. Although there are opportunities for connections, May just cannot suppress her natural and somewhat disturbing personality quirks, and as a result: push people away. Sadly, this trend of failed connections continues as May makes one last futile attempt at friendship with both her co-worker and a handsome film student (Jeremy Sisto). So what is a lonely, slightly unstable, and potentially violent young woman do to gain a friend? Why make one of course. So many pretty parts, and no pretty wholes.

The MARCH of Death, Day 5: White Zombie Review

It often frustrates me when I think about this generation's horror fans. Due to the fact that so many films are being remade; many of these young people have no idea that there actually were original genre films that predated these reboots. They either don't know about or don't care to bother with Carpenter's Halloween or Romero's Dawn of the Dead. However, horror fans of my generation are guilty of something as well: not taking the time to seek out and watch the true origins of the genre. It seems ridiculous to me. With many of these early works in the public domain, one can get 100 on a DVD for ten or twenty bucks. Now granted, most of them will truly suck; but there is still tremendous relevance to these films. If one watches them through a historical lens, as a student, some of them can be quite enjoyable and informative. Case in point, White Zombie. Filmed in just 11 days back in 1932 this film is one of the earlier portrayals of zombies in cinema. These are the voodoo type zombies. The one's that existed far before Romero turned them into uncontrollable flesh munching machines. These are the undead creatures that can be controlled and willed against others. Using the sets left over from Universal's Frankenstein and Dracula, costing just $50,000, and showcasing Bela Lugosi's considerable presence; White Zombie is a minimally spoken work of true dread. Yes, if you don't give into it you may find it corny; but just like your dear old granddad in the plaid pants and stripped shirt, it's far more rewarding to spend time with your predecessors than avoid them because they're simply not flashy.

I've heard it said more times than not, that Stephen King's adaptations on a whole are very poorly done. For the shear volume of his works that have been turned into films, I beg to differ: The Shining, Creepshow, Christine, Firestarter, Cat's Eye, Silver Bullet, Stand By Me, Pet Semetary, Misery, The Dark Half, Dolores Claiborne, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, OK I'll stop now. And in my very humble opinion, Carrie is the most successful of these adaptations. Lensed by Brian DePalma, Carrie tells the story of a young misfit girl who fits in neither at school or at home. Constantly berated and emotionally strangled by her own mother, Carrie is quite a pitiful mess. This sad sack of a teen also has some pretty terrifying ways of relieving her grief and stress on those who inflict it upon her. In a performance that breaks your heart and soils your undies in equal parts: Sissy Spacek shows you the worst possible outcome of bullying. Even when things seem to go poor Carrie's way, the stars and her peers inevitably line up against her and virtually give her no choice. Just think about the possibilities if you had her special “gift.” What would you have done? Well, let's just say, I think the kids at the prom got off a bit easy. Over 30 years old, King's words still hold up on the screen and Ms. Spacek's performance still requires a change of undergarments upon completion of viewing. It has nothing to do with Satan. It's me. If I concentrate hard enough I can make things move...

Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna’s grief-stricken boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) still can’t shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn’t what he appears to be. Long before Sam Raimi got the chance to flex his geek muscles with the Spiderman franchise, long before Bruce Campbell became known as simply “the chin,” and long before horror films started being made without any heart; there was The Evil Dead. Part of a trilogy that remains the foundation upon which my love of horror was built; this is the film that shot Raimi's Delta 88 to stardom. Although many fans regard Evil Dead 2 as a far superior film, there's something really special about the original. You get to see the impetuous of Raimi's creatively spastic camera work. You get to see Ash before he was the boomstick wielding, arrogant everyman. The viewer is even subjected to a tree rape scene! Yes, that is the kind of film that a bunch of Michigan kids with no money and a twisted dream brought to the masses. Campbell certainly is nowhere near a polished performer in this film. His lines are delivered and/or forced in a noticeably insecure manner. But again, what you have is a performance that oozes with heart and genuine commitment. The onslaught of visceral action and amateur gore is simply awe inspiring! The Necronomicon unleashing the Deadites upon an unsuspecting group of simpletons, just relentless. And the flair with which Raimi presents this chaotic circus of carnage is brilliant. Maybe in the second film they did perfect what they started in the first. However, for me, The Evil Dead is a movie that truly exemplifies what independent, micro-budget film making was always meant to be. Soon all of you will be like me... Then who will lock you up in the cellar?

REMINDER: These reviews will be brief, as there are 31 in total to write this month. The purpose is to give a few quick thoughts about each film and consequently open the door to discussion.

To state that a movie like Psycho comes along once in a lifetime would be selling this groundbreaking film short. It's often said that Alfred Hitchcock brought to the screen the first true depiction of a serial killer. Whether this is true or not is of course up for debate. However, what the maestro of the macabre did, was bring mental illness to the masses. With the Bate's House high on that hill looming threateningly over the motel; and in Norman Bates, American film-goers were shown two things: how a homicidal maniac acts, and what drove this particular “psycho” to his actions. What else was so daring was the casting of Janet Leigh. This was a leading lady. A woman who embodied both thief and heroine. A women who would be propped in front of the audience as it's protagonist; only to be killed at the end of the first act in a scene so shocking, that the sound design of that moment lives on even today. While her blood circles that shower drain, we all feel our expectations shattered, and we to begin spiraling out of control. As is true with most defining performances, Anthony Perkins forever became linked to his psychotic alter ego. Janet Leigh became the first scream queen. And Alfred Hitchcock pierced our mind's eye with what has became recognized as the pinnacle of his 50 year film career. A boy's best friend is his mother...

Based out of modern day Chicago, the Dead Light District is an independent true crime thriller that will be produced in the same spirit of classic crime films such as Maniac, The Midnight Meat Train, Zodiac and The New York Ripper while having the production value and story telling aspects inspired by directors such as David Fincher, James Wan & Martin Scorsese.

The Dead Light District tells the story of 27 year old Jonah Sharp (Christopher Howell), a former award winning crime journalist in Chicago desperately searching for a way to save his failing career from an early and unexpected retirement. After being fired from the Chicago Tribune for a number of reasons Jonah is forced to take employment writing a celebrity sleaze column, a job that begins to slowly eat away at his pride and self-esteem. In an effort to regain his own recognition as a true crime journalist Jonah accepts an unlikely assignment given to him to seek out information regarding a string of gruesome murders being reported around the Red Light District.

A desolate part of the city that serves as a haven for criminal activity. An assignment that serves as a life changing event for Jonah when he becomes witness to the brutal homicide of a prostitute who is murdered by the same psychopath responsible for all of the prior killings being discovered around the District. Things go from bad to worse for Jonah after suddenly receiving a gift from an anonymous “reader”. An unusual gift that lands him face to face with the only one capable of saving his career by any means necessary.

The MARCH of Death, Day 1: A Nightmare On Elm Street

REMINDER: These reviews will be brief, as there are 31 in total to write this month. The purpose is to give a few brief thoughts about each film and consequently open the door to discussion.

Nightmare is a film I actually haven't revisited in quite some time. I felt compelled to do so due to the impending release of the remake. Let me say that nostalgia goes a long way in helping this film stand the test of time. The story remains solid no matter what the year: Child killer takes revenge against children (in their dreams) whose parents burnt him alive. You die in your dream... You die in real life. The kills also remain inventive. But what really makes the viewing experience just as enjoyable today as it was back when it first clawed it's way onto the big screen is Freddy Krueger. Less the maniac joker he became in the later installments; in the original, Robert Englund channels straight up evil. People will point to Last House on the Left, Swamp Thing, and maybe even The Serpent and the Rainbow. However for me, this is what Wes Craven will be remembered for. Like Jaws made us afraid to go in the water, Freddy Krueger made us all afraid to go to sleep. One, Two, Freddy's coming for you... Three, Four, better lock your door..........

'Hell's Ground' Review

Here it is kids!!! Omar Khan's 2007 Horror film Hell's Ground. Much like any memorable RONCO product, this film does many things simultaneously. It's a zombie film, it's a slasher, it's Pakistan's first entry in the horror canon. No, wait; it's all three! Clocking in at a brisk 78 minutes, one may be wondering how they were able to successfully marry both of these sub-genres into one film. Well, Khan didn't really succeed. Not that Hell's Ground isn't enjoyable. It just doesn't know what it wants to be about. Perhaps I should clarify by saying it IS a slasher, but wants to have a zombie apocalypse as it's backdrop. That, in my opinion, is where it loses any hope of being a rush of a film watching experience and merely becomes fun. There's certainly nothing wrong with a fun movie. It is however, disappointing when you see the potential for an invigoratingly oddball film quickly descend into just a fun movie.

Hell's Ground begins by introducing us to our five Pakistani teenage leads. We are shown their various living conditions, as our protagonists all come from different socio-economic households. This is a nice way to introduce the non-Pakistani audience to a little of their culture. From the beginning, I was pretty excited at the prospect of taking a peak behind the curtain of Middle Eastern civilization. Throughout the film there are glimpses of cultural elements so foreign to a North American viewer that it's downright fascinating. It's kind of like watching March of the Penguins and having one cute little waddle bird rip the other's throat out.

Once our five leads have lied their way out of their respective homes, they meet up and head out on the road in a dilapidated “Mystery Machine” of a van. It seems their destination is a “rock” concert of sorts that their parents would hardly approve of. At this point I was thoroughly along for the ride. So when the cell phone service failed and the van ran out of gas, I was able to wave out the window at these annoying horror cliches as I passed them on the side of the proverbial dirt road. At this point, the director suddenly channels Lucio Fulci and we have our first zombie encounter. To call this a giddy moment of zombie goodness would be an understatement. It REALLY felt less reminiscent and more authentic than anything else. Much like Ti West's House of the Devil, I was genuinely transported into another time. Sadly, the film moves away from this zombie tease and into slasher territory. Not that I don't love slashers. I just thought I was watching a zombie film!

Suddenly, midway through act two we get grubby, toothless, backwoods people popping up and thrilling us with their oddness. The atmosphere here was certainly palpable. The wooded location and characters lack of dental hygiene really added to the nasty feel of the film. As our principles begin to separate, looking for any type of assistance, we are introduced to our primary antagonist. This burqa wearing behemoth is in his own right, pretty damn creepy. Imagine if Leatherface had been the one wearing the sheet and glasses in the bedroom instead of Michael Myers. The gore is there. However, what you get is aftermath gore. Often times when budgets become a crutch you have filmmakers that can't show the cutting, just the blood. Although this is a bit of a disappointment, it really did not pull me out of the film. What pulled me out of the film was wondering where the damn zombies went. In any event, all hell breaks loose and the battle for survival is on.

All things considered, Hell's Ground does not break any new “ground.” What it does do however, through no effort on it's director's part, is bring Pakistani horror to us. That is not intended to be an insult. He is a Pakistani filmmaker, who made a Pakistani horror film. Thus, he obviously and unintentionally brought us a Pakistani horror film. Once I resigned myself to the fact that I was not getting much of anything different (just from a different world) from this director; I really was able to enjoy it. The acting was pretty solid, the direction was serviceable, and as I stated before: the cultural elements really did interest me. Will this film be added to my DVD collection? More than likely not. I can however, say with all honesty, that while not a masterpiece in any way, this movie falls solidly into the “wow, I'm really glad I got to see this” category. Final thoughts: Hell's Ground is a fun little film, it slices, it dices, it entertains.

Sweeter then showing off your surgical scar, The film from Sony Screen Gems, Resident Evil: Afterlife, will debut its teaser trailer before 'A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) which is set to hit theaters on April 30th. Milla Jovovich on her twitter said: this will be a nice early look at the 3-D sequel that brings Paul W.S. Anderson back behind the camera for one final adventure for ALice before the franchise is rebooted.

Plot synopsis: Resident Evil: Afterlife picks up right after the ending of the third film. Alice teams up with a group of survivors who have been hiding since the T-Virus outbreak, one of them survivors is Claire's brother Chris Redfield.

UK Bloodbath 'SALVAGE' Trailer and Stills

Every so often there comes a trailer that interests certain, macabre individuals. Salvage seems to be one for you Horrorland movie lovers. After taking a close glance at this trailer, it seemed shocking: more shocking then possibly finding your significant other sleeping with an inflatable blow up doll, yeah, this is that movie! Plot synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve and a quiet cul-de-sac is suddenly plunged into a world of violence, terror and paranoia when a group of heavily armed military personnel storms the area, sealing off the close and ordering the residents at gunpoint to retreat inside their homes. Unsure if this is the first sign of a terrorist attack, or something worse, one local single mother, Beth (Neve Mcintosh), finds it in herself to fight to save her estranger daughter, Jodie (Linzey Cocker), who is visiting her for the holiday but is now stranded across the street in a neighbour’s house. However, with growing dread, the trapped residents soon discover that the imminent threat is far more monstrous than any of them could possibly imagine. Only one thing is certain… survival is no longer guaranteed.

“Salvage” lands in select UK cinemas March 19, before hitting DVD a scant three days later on March 22. You can also catch it on Sky Box Office, iTunes, FilmFlex and LOVEFilM on the same day it hits theaters.

'The Crazies' (2010) Review

It takes alot to get me into a theater on opening day. Don't get me wrong, I love the experience: the scope, the sound, the brushed aluminum flask hidden securely in the front of my Fruit of the Looms. But as much as I love watching a film on the big screen, I often steer clear for one simple reason: the crowds. I'm not someone who is typically antisocial. I however, like to watch my movies in SILENCE; not with constant chatter, cell phones lighting up, and the continual crunch and smack of popcorn and Goobers. So it says something about my anticipation for Breck Eisner's remake of The Crazies, that I slid off to a matinee during it's first day on the silver screen. Although I have already heard it and voiced the opinion myself, I'm going to restate the obvious: if ever there was a “classic” genre film ripe for remaking/re-imagining, it was George A. Romero's 1973 disjointed citizens gone wild mess. There certainly is some nostalgia involved with the original, there are solid social themes on display, but overall it's just not a very good film. With that in mind, I was truly excited about watching a remake that had the potential to improve upon the original work.

The film opens in fine fashion when a plane carrying a secret biological weapon crashes into a lake; this time a small town in Iowa, rather than Pennsylvania. Said biological weapon of course begins contaminating the water supply. As it starts taking over the town's residents, the infected begin to prey on their neighbors, friends, and family. You've all seen the trailer with the infected guy getting gunned down on the baseball field by Olyphant's Sheriff Dutton. This scene is pretty indicative of the events that follow throughout the movie's running time. This is not a case of nauseous repetition. These moments are done well; viscerally, violently, and with great graphic gusto by effects wizard Robert Hall. Don't misunderstand me, there is a solid thread of genuine character development, there's even a bit of tension, it's not scary per say, but the look and feel of the kills and violence really give the film an enjoyable pace and visual flare.

It's no surprise to the viewer when the government arrives to contain the outbreak at any cost, literally. In their own way the costumed government goons armed to the hilt are a bit creepy. That is, if it unsettles you to think of the possibility of this scenario playing out in your own backyard. They take David’s pregnant wife Judy (Radha Mitchell) into custody because she has begun to show signs of infection. It's here that Sheriff Dutton, his wife, Russell (Joe Anderson), and a young girl, Becca (Danielle Panabaker) make their daring escape from the government's grasp. At this point the film really begins to explore the likability of these characters, their relationships, and their somewhat futile attempts to avoid the inevitable. Although Olyphant and Mitchell are solid, it is Joe Anderson who really stole the spotlight. His portrayal of an everyman trying to survive in his insane new reality resonated with me. I won't veer into spoiler territory, because that is not what I do. What I am known to do is give the reader the foundation and let you either enjoy watching the house being built or suffer while it crumbles to rubble. So there you have it.

Those who have a genuine affection for the 1973 version may resist this the same way fans of the original The Hills Have Eyes fought against what I feel was a far superior film in Alexander Aja's retelling. That is quite understandable. Although not without it's flaws, The Crazies(2010) has a lot going for it: a respectable cast, an enjoyable visual flair, and most importantly: thematic execution that pushes the narrative along quite nicely. Eisner does, at times, seem to rely too heavily on the jump scare; A technique I believe is there for the less seasoned horror fan. It's a crutch for sure, but doesn't fail every time in this instance. Despite having it's heart firmly in the horror genre, it might be described better as action adventure with some horror elements sprinkled in for good measure. That's not a bad thing, because this balancing act works quite well. So where does this leave us? It leaves us with a film that is well worth the trip to your local multiplex, a film that drastically improves upon the former, and a film that will find it's way into my DVD library. Is it perfect? Nope... Is it a fun ride? Hell yes!!!

We imagine that all of you out there in Horrorland can wholeheartedly identify with our genuine love of Halloween. Many people think of Christmas as less of a day and more of a season; We feel the very same way about All Hallows Eve. This time we look upon this time of the year in many different ways: apple cider, the drop in temperatures, dry leaves falling from the trees and dancing in the wind, jack-o-lanterns, the list goes on and on. However, for us, this wonderful celebration (for many years) has been all about the 31 Days of Halloween. This is a horror enthusiast's wet dream. A time when we hunker down and commit to our love of the genre. A time when for 31 straight days we watch a different horror film each day for the entire month of October. So, more than the little ones running around in latex and face paint, more than the crisp crackle of candied apples, and those little bastards that smash pumpkins each year; we miss the 31 Days of Halloween more than we're comfortable to admit.

In order to set our emotional compass back to due north and ease the Halloween home sickness deep in the belly, we hereby announce the MARCH of Death! That's right, it's back!!! For the month of March, Chris will once again be watching a film a day for 31 days. This list always consists of old favorites, recent fair, and of course; desperately trying to make a dent in the pile of DVDs that we never seem to get around to. So whether you play along, go off on your own, or just want to stop by and see what's going on with the MARCH of Death, here's how it'll work. Below you will find a list of all 31 films I will commit to watch in March. As Chris watches a film, you can check back here and get a quick overview of each viewing and what he thought of it. Hopefully in the process you can get turned on to something you may not have seen before. Second FULL Trailer for A Nightmare On Elm Street'

Warner Bros gives horror fans a treat before Halloween with the SECOND FULL TRAILER of, A Nightmare On Elm Street. Although the film will not slice through theaters until April 30th, they figured why not amp up a couple of nipples and give fan boys an erection.

Freddy Krueger returns in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street,’ a contemporary re-imagining of the horror classic. A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond: they are all being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who hunts them in their dreams. As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another… but when they sleep, there is no escape. Jackie Earle Haley stars as Krueger.
